Some research findings suggest that more than half of adolescents behave in a risky way at least once in their lives (e.g. Smart et al., 2004). We were interested in whether the manifestations of risk behaviour are related to physical self-concept, specifically body proportions. The very strong targeting of social norms to the desired look sets the norm for what the ideal body should look like. This norm operates very strongly during adolescence.
